SUVs: has the consumer climate changed?

Between 2010 and 2019, sales of dual-purpose cars (SUVs and crossovers) increased by 260% (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders).  However, the size and weight of SUVs means that they are heavy drinkers in the last chance saloon of energy resources.  

In the context of the climate crisis, will consumers find this format of car increasingly unacceptable?
